It's difficult enough to lose weight, but reducing belly fat in particular might be particularly difficult. That's because most belly fat differs from fat found elsewhere on your body. The majority of your belly fat is termed visceral fat, which is deeper than normal body mass and surrounds your abdominal organs. Because of this, it is more unhelpful than other types of body fat, and having too much of it might raise your chance of developing conditions like mellitus or coronary artery disease. 1. Green tea

One of the most well-known teas for reducing abdominal fat is probably green tea. According to a 2022 study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, participants who consumed large amounts of green tea—four or more cups per day—had a 44% lower risk of developing abdominal obesity than those who did not drink green tea. 

An older 2008 study published in Physiology & Behavior discovered that obese participants who drank green tea on an ongoing schedule lost more overall body weight than those who did not drink it, and a 2009 study published in The Journal of Nutrition discovered that consuming green tea catechins—an antioxidant found in green tea leaves—can help reduce abdominal fat when combined with exercise.

However, what gives green tea its ability to burn abdominal fat? According to investigations, its abundant polyphenols—including catechins, another type of which are polyphenols—are primarily responsible for the calorie reduction benefits. ECGC, the most prevalent catechin in green tea, has been connected to accelerated metabolism.

Other tea varieties include EGCG, but green tea contains the largest concentration of these plant chemicals that increase metabolism.

2. Oolong tea

Another tea that has been shown to help with abdominal obesity is oolong tea.

Oolong tea originates from the same leaves as black and emerald tea, but it has undergone partial oxidation, while black tea undergoes complete oxidation. The leaves are dried in the sun until they are wilted and curled up to make oolong.

indicates that oolong tea has polyphenols that are associated with a lower body fat percentage and a quicker metabolism. One animal study published in The Journal of Nutrition found that the polyphenols in green, black, and oolong teas might all help reduce visceral fat tissue.

In fact, according to 2020 research from the University of Tsukuba, oolong tea enhanced the breakdown of fat by around 20% and kept doing so as the subjects slept.

3. Black tea

Those who enjoy chai, English morning tea, and Earl Grey (all varieties of black tea) will be happy to hear that studies have shown that black tea can help people lose weight and reduce visceral fat.

According to a 2016 report published in the journal Molecules, the polyphenols found in black tea have anti-obesity properties and can help with body weight and visceral fat loss, whereas a human study mentioned earlier in The Journal of Nutrition includes black tea alongside oolong and green tea for its effect on abdominal fat.

In a 2014 study that appeared in Food & Function, participants who consumed three cups of black tea daily for three months saw greater weight reduction, and they had a smaller waist circumference (also known as belly fat) than individuals who did not consume tea.

4. White tea

We've previously discussed three of the four main varieties of tea: green, orange, and black. The fourth category of tea is white tea, which is the most delicate and least processed variety.

White tea, like green and oolong tea, has been shown to boost metabolism and fat oxidation, potentially aiding in overall weight reduction or control.

A recent 2023 study published in Food Safety & Health found that white tea was good for weight loss, particularly visceral fat.

5. Pu-erh Tea

Now that we've discussed the belly fat-burning properties of green, oolong, black, and white tea, let's look at a specific kind within each of these categories.

Pu-erh tea, a fermented Chinese black tea, has been associated with weight loss or fat reduction in various studies.

A 2014 study published in Phytotherapy Research discovered that male metabolic syndrome patients who drank pu-erh tea had a small decrease in body fat and BMI.

Another Nutrition Research study found that extract from pu-erh tea reduced body weight, BMI, and visceral fat in Japanese individuals.
