Kumasi, Ghana – The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, joined the anniversary celebration of one of the prestigious senior high schools in Ghana, Prempeh College, which marked its 75th anniversary on Thursday. The event celebrating the college's long history and commitment to excellence in education brought together old students, dignitaries, and students.
In a keynote address, President Akufo-Addo praised Prempeh College for playing an important role in the lives of the future leaders of Ghana. The president, while emphasizing the importance of Free SHS, which he introduced back in 2017, said this has opened doors for thousands of students across the nation. "This policy has reduced considerably the burden on parents, leading to more young people gaining access to quality education," he noted.
The President admitted that the education sector was facing challenges but said it was hopeful about the ongoing reforms to improve standards, repeating that the government was committed to ensuring that every Ghanaian child had the opportunity to receive a quality education. "Education is the bedrock of our development, and we must invest in it for a brighter future," he said.
Some of the alumni present at the anniversary celebration shared experiences on how the education acquired from Prempeh College has influenced their lives and careers. They hailed the institution for teaching them to work hard, be disciplined, and live their lives with integrity. There were cultural performances at the event that showed the rich culture the college had built within itself toward contributing to national development.
To this effect, he announced that the President was committed to further investments in educational infrastructure throughout the country, ensuring that schools like Prempeh College continued to thrive. "We need to consolidate the gains made so far with the Free SHS policy and work toward attaining an education system that would adequately prepare our youth for the future challenges ahead," he concluded.
These celebrations have been an anniversary but also a call to action-a summation of the history of the college and a rallying cry for further investment in education as one avenue toward development.
