Manchester United continued their rocky Premier League season, with a 1-1 draw against Chelsea marking their worst start since 1986. Moises Caicedo’s late equalizer prevented United from securing a win in their first league match since the departure of Erik ten Hag, with Ruud van Nistelrooy serving as interim coach. Though Bruno Fernandes’s penalty had put United ahead in the 70th minute, Caicedo’s powerful response shortly after drew Chelsea level and allowed them to overtake Arsenal, climbing to fourth on goal difference. United, however, remain in 13th place with only 12 points from 10 games—six points shy of the top four.
Van Nistelrooy, revered by fans for his striking prowess during his playing days, received enthusiastic support from the Old Trafford crowd. His interim tenure began with a promising 5-2 victory over Leicester in the League Cup quarterfinals, creating optimism among fans who hoped the team could recover from recent home defeats against Liverpool and Tottenham. The encounter with Chelsea, however, showcased several of the same issues that plagued the team under Ten Hag, including a lack of finishing and defensive lapses.
The game’s opening half was largely uneventful, with both teams struggling to convert opportunities. Noni Madueke’s post-hitting attempt for Chelsea and Marcus Rashford’s volley off the crossbar for United were rare moments of excitement. Pedro Neto nearly scored early in the second half, but his shot drifted wide. Despite Chelsea’s recent reliance on young star Cole Palmer, Van Nistelrooy’s midfield pairing of Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte kept him relatively subdued.
United’s struggle in front of goal has been a season-long issue. They have only scored eight times in their previous nine league games, and squandered several key chances in this match as well. Alejandro Garnacho missed a prime opportunity from a Fernandes cut-back, while Rasmus Hojlund’s penalty claim was initially United’s best hope for a goal. Fernandes delivered with a composed spot-kick that ignited celebrations among the fans and Van Nistelrooy alike. However, Chelsea equalized just minutes later when a poorly cleared corner allowed Caicedo to rifle in from the edge of the box.
The Ecuadorian midfielder has been under intense scrutiny since joining Chelsea for a British record £115 million, but his performance against United showcased his potential. Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca praised Caicedo, explaining, “People expect [big transfers] to be the best immediately. It’s normal to have some ups and downs, but he’s improving and showing how good he can be.”
Both teams had opportunities in the closing minutes. Chelsea substitute Enzo Fernandez missed an open goal, while Garnacho’s acrobatic attempt went just over the bar, leaving United without the winning edge. After the match, Van Nistelrooy expressed optimism despite the draw, saying, “When you create a lot... I’m not too worried. Results will come.”
Manchester United now face a crucial stretch under Van Nistelrooy as they await the arrival of Ruben Amorim, who will assume the managerial role later this month. The team will need to find consistency in finishing and sharpen their defense if they hope to climb from their disappointing league position and contend for a spot in European competition. Meanwhile, Chelsea’s ongoing form—just one loss in nine games—has them well-positioned as they continue their upward trajectory under Maresca.
