At one of the recent campaign events, Ghana's Vice President and also the presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has assured the youths that their needs and aspirations would top his agenda as president when elected to the post during general elections slated later in the year. Addressing a snappy assembly of young Ghanaians, he emphasized that the country's future depended on how the youths were empowered.
Bawumia talked much about the youth forming the future of Ghana. "You are the future leaders, and your affairs will be uppermost on my agenda when I eventually become president," he claimed. His statement resonates particularly with the young generation, who desire change in the country. Many feel that the government has promised much but has delivered very little.
During the address, Bawumia outlined a raft of activities geared toward ensuring youth development through improvement in access to quality education, increasing access to funds for entrepreneurship among the youth, and creating employment opportunities in the key sectors of the economy, including technology and agriculture. He emphasized digital innovation, adding that his administration was committed to supporting innovative technologies that enable young people to become entrepreneurs.
The Vice President also addressed inclusive governance, ensuring that the voice of the youth would be represented in policy-making processes. "A government which does not listen to its young people cannot effectively lead," he said, repeating his pledge for the creation of platforms for youth engagement in national decision-making.
Youths leaders present at the event said they were excited about the plans of Bawumia, adding that such would make a big difference in their outlooks. "We need leaders who understand our challenges and who are willing to invest in our future," said one youth advocate.
The focus on the youths by Bawumia may just be what will rally them into this election, considering that they are a greater percentage of the population as the election draws near. Having many seeking a leader who champions their causes, the assurance by Bawumia may just set the tone for his campaigns and probably change the political dynamics in Ghana.
