The siting government has done a very good job by implementing the free senior high school policy which was promised in 2016. After the implementation of the policy, schools experienced a surge in the number of students admitted. This indicated that financial matters was a restricting factor to many Ghanaians in an attempt to acquire second cycle education.
The policy took the total cost of tuition, feeding and accommodation but however, the policy has extreme downfalls. Students are now divided into groups for alternation since the infrastructure of the schools cannot accommodate all students at the same time. Also, many parents have expressed their worries on the short times hey have to raise money to support their kids especially first years who are supposed to provide all items on the prospectus list. Recently, a concerned parents in an interview on Citi Tv requested that government suspends the policy for it is costly more than when parents paid the fees of their wards.
In a post sighted on the official twitter page of Datanomics is a clarity statement from Mr. Kwasi Kwarteng, spokesperson of the education ministry. In is statement, he addressed the news of parents having to spend more on prospectus items which defies the importance of the free senior high school policy originally implemented to alleviate financial burden on parents. He stated that first-years will only need about 600 cedis to purchase items on the prospectus list and not 3,500 cedis as stated by some citizens.
This statement has caught the attention of many netizens who showed their surprise in relation to the statement. Currently the price of goods and services in the country has skyrocketed and how is it possible to have all items on the prospectus list with 600 cedis. Find below some comments I gathered from the post.
