Ghana Armed Forces Signals Readiness for Upcoming Elections
As Ghana's December 7 general elections draw near, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recently showcased their preparedness to ensure national security and stability throughout the electoral period. Speaking at the annual Land Combat and Fire Power Demonstration, held on November 1 at the Army Peace Operations Training School in Bundase, Chief of the Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Asari Bekoe, reaffirmed the military's commitment to safeguarding peace and underscored the importance of national unity.
The exercise brought together key units, including the 5th Infantry Battalion, the Special Forces Brigade, the 15 Armoured Brigade, and the 66 Artillery Regiment. These units demonstrated an array of military assets and coordinated operations to showcase their capability to respond to security threats. Equipped with armored vehicles, machine guns, artillery, and other advanced weaponry, GAF's forces simulated realistic combat scenarios, focusing on gathering intelligence, neutralizing threats, and protecting national stability.
Air Vice Marshal Bekoe addressed the gathering of senior military officials and emphasized that while the Armed Forces are equipped to respond to potential threats, peace should be a collective goal for all Ghanaians. He called on citizens to safeguard democracy by fostering unity and being mindful of the impact of their words and actions during this critical election period.
The exercise underscored GAF’s readiness to tackle threats and ensure the safety of voters and the electoral process. Supported by the Ghana Air Force, front-line soldiers demonstrated efficient responses to simulated terrorist threats, securing the mock battlefield with minimal casualties. Such training is crucial for students from the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (GAFCSC), who evaluated the operational readiness of joint task forces and battle groups.
Additionally, the Ghana Navy played an essential role in securing coastal borders, collaborating with the Army and Air Force to form a coordinated defense across land, sea, and air.
The Ghana Armed Forces, though prepared to defend the country, emphasized that long-lasting peace hinges on a shared commitment to unity and respect for the democratic process. The Land Combat and Fire Power Demonstration served as a powerful reminder of the Armed Forces' capacity and as a call for all citizens to contribute to a peaceful electoral environment.
