Mahama Criticizes Akufo-Addo and Bawumia for Missing National Peace Campaign Launch
Former President John Mahama has voiced disappointment over the absence of President Nana Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia at the recent National Peace Campaign launch. Speaking at the event, Mahama emphasized that the President and Vice President’s presence would have underscored the government’s commitment to peace, especially during a tense electoral season.
Mahama revealed he canceled a planned rally in Karaga, Northern Region, to attend the peace event in Accra, expecting both leaders to be present. Instead, he found neither the President nor the Vice President in attendance. Mahama argued that, as national leaders responsible for ensuring security and stability, they should prioritize peace initiatives over other engagements, especially with rising concerns over election-related tensions.
Upon inquiring, Mahama learned that Dr. Bawumia was attending a youth-focused event on employment strategies. While acknowledging the importance of youth employment, Mahama questioned if such commitments were yielding tangible outcomes. He pointed out the increase in unemployment from 8.4% when he left office to 14.7% under the current administration, noting this as evidence of unmet promises on job creation.
Further, Mahama cited outstanding allowances owed to National Builders Corps (NABCO) trainees, suggesting the current government had fallen short of fulfilling its pledges to young people. He argued that if job creation were indeed a priority, these challenges would have been addressed more effectively.
He urged the government to prioritize peace and stability in the lead-up to the elections, stressing that such efforts are crucial for a secure electoral process. Mahama’s comments come amid mounting pressures on the ruling administration to address socioeconomic issues, including youth unemployment, which he sees as directly linked to national peace and security.
The event served as a reminder of the role all political leaders play in safeguarding peace, particularly during election periods. Mahama called on Ghanaians to uphold unity and support initiatives that promote stability across the nation, hoping for a peaceful election cycle.
