Ghana Health Service Urges Citizens to Maintain Clean Environment Amid Rising Cholera Cases
The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has issued a pressing advisory, urging Ghanaians to maintain a clean environment, following a surge in cholera cases nationwide. As of the latest reports, 56 cases have been confirmed, with nine of these cases emerging from the Ada West and Ada East districts in the Greater Accra Region [2).
*Prevention Measures*
To combat the spread of cholera, the GHS recommends the following:
- _Proper Waste Disposal_: Ensure proper disposal of human waste and garbage to prevent contamination of water sources.
- _Clean Water Sources_: Use clean and safe water for drinking, cooking, and personal hygiene.
- _Food Handling_: Handle food safely, avoiding raw or undercooked foods that may be contaminated.
- _Personal Hygiene_: Maintain good personal hygiene, washing hands frequently with soap and water.
Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, Director-General of the GHS, emphasized the importance of individual responsibility in preventing the spread of cholera ¹. By adopting these simple yet effective measures, Ghanaians can significantly reduce their risk of contracting the disease.
*Cholera in Ghana*
Cholera outbreaks are not uncommon in Ghana, particularly during the rainy season. The disease spreads through contaminated food, water, or direct contact with an infected person. Symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, which can lead to severe dehydration and even death if left untreated.
The GHS has confirmed cases of cholera in the Greater Accra region, with reports emerging from the Ada West District ². The initial case was reported on October 4, 2024, after a patient presented symptoms of vomiting and abdominal pain following attendance at a funeral in the district.
*Government Response*
The government, through the GHS, has taken proactive measures to contain the outbreak. These include:
- _Enhanced Surveillance_: Intensified monitoring and reporting of suspected cholera cases.
- _Public Education_: Nationwide campaigns to educate citizens on cholera prevention and control.
- _Improved Sanitation_: Efforts to improve waste management and sanitation infrastructure.
By working together, Ghanaians can help curb the spread of cholera and maintain a healthy environment.
