UK to Transition to E-Visas by 2025: What Ghanaians Need to Know
Starting January 1, 2025, the United Kingdom will introduce a fully digital visa system, known as E-Visas, to replace all existing physical visa documents. This transition, highlighted in an advisory issued by Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, was shared by the British High Commission and is part of a broader initiative to streamline UK immigration procedures.
Under the new regulations, all current forms of physical visa documentation, such as Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) and Biometric Residence Cards (BRCs), will no longer be valid after December 31, 2024. The Ministry advises that any Ghanaian intending to stay in the UK for more than six months after this date should apply for an E-Visa. This change applies even to those currently holding valid BRPs for permissions to live, work, or study in the UK, as all physical permits will expire at the end of this year.
The Ministry has strongly encouraged Ghanaians, particularly those planning to travel outside the UK during the holiday season, to complete the E-Visa process before December 31, 2024. This recommendation is aimed at preventing potential re-entry complications in the new year when only digital visas will be recognized.
To assist individuals affected by these changes, the advisory directs them to consult the British High Commission’s official website or contact UK immigration authorities for detailed application guidance. The Ministry also emphasizes the importance of compliance with the new visa process to ensure seamless entry and stay within the UK.
This transition marks a significant shift towards digital documentation and is intended to streamline the immigration process, potentially enhancing security and convenience for travelers. However, Ghanaians are encouraged to prepare for this shift early, given that the new E-Visa system represents a complete overhaul of traditional, physical visa handling.
As the UK adapts to a fully digital system, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is actively guiding citizens to avoid last-minute complications. This advisory is an important reminder for Ghanaians to stay informed and to take prompt action as the deadline for physical visa validity draws near.
