No Public Holiday on November 8 for Farmers’ Day, Confirms Interior Ministry see
On November 5, 2024, the Ministry of the Interior officially announced that Friday, November 8, will not be a public holiday in Ghana. This day coincides with the observance of the 2024 National Farmers' Day, an annual celebration honoring the contributions of farmers to the nation. Despite the occasion, the ministry clarified that it will not designate this Friday as a statutory holiday.
In a statement signed by Interior Minister Henry Quartey, the ministry reiterated that the recognized statutory holiday for Farmers' Day will fall on Friday, December 6, 2024. This date remains unchanged and will be observed across the country as a day off in recognition of the invaluable role of farmers in Ghana’s economic and social framework.
The announcement came after the Ministry of Food and Agriculture recently confirmed that the 40th edition of National Farmers’ Day will indeed take place on November 8, 2024. President Nana Akufo-Addo affirmed the date, noting that this year’s ceremony will be held in the Greater Accra Region, marking a shift from previous years' celebrations, which often included regional events.
This year, rather than hosting regional-level celebrations, each region has been given the opportunity to nominate farmers for ten award categories. These nominees will be honored at a national Awards Night Ceremony, which will take place on November 8, 2024, at the Alisa Hotel in North Ridge, Accra. The event is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m., where distinguished farmers from across Ghana will gather to receive awards conferred by Regional Ministers on behalf of the nation.
This streamlined celebration, which forgoes regional ceremonies, emphasizes the national significance of Farmers’ Day and aims to bring together farmers from all regions to one central venue. The Interior Ministry's decision aligns with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture’s focus on hosting a unified and impactful celebration, recognizing the resilience and dedication of Ghanaian farmers and their essential contributions to food security, rural livelihoods, and the national economy.
This clarification aims to reduce any confusion regarding the observance of Farmers’ Day on November 8 versus the public holiday on December 6. By maintaining the public holiday in December, the government preserves the statutory observance for workers across the country while also allowing a national gathering in Accra for those selected for awards.
The 2024 National Farmers’ Day is expected to highlight the government's ongoing efforts to support and celebrate the agricultural sector, which is vital to Ghana’s development. The ceremony will acknowledge farmers who have demonstrated outstanding dedication, innovation, and productivity, thereby contributing significantly to the nation’s food supply and economy.
