Trump Gains Lead Over Harris in Battleground States as 2024 Election Tightens
A prominent member of Ghana's New Patriotic Party, Gabby Otchere-Darko, has commented that former U.S. President Donald Trump appears poised to secure a victory in the 2024 election. Sharing his thoughts on Facebook, Otchere-Darko noted that although the Democrats believe the race remains close, Trump is reportedly much nearer to the necessary 270 electoral votes, reflecting his resurgence in key battleground states. "He lost to Biden over COVID, but is now remembered for his economic record. Trump’s position on the issues is clear to voters," he wrote.
Trump’s success in states such as North Carolina and Georgia, along with leads in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan, indicates strong support across areas that are crucial to securing the presidency, according to projections from CBS. In addition, Trump appears to be ahead in Nevada and remains competitive in Arizona, which has been closely watched throughout the election cycle.
The Republican candidate's expected victory in conservative states from Florida to Idaho was contrasted by Harris’s success in liberal strongholds, including New York and California. At Harris’s election night gathering at Howard University in Washington, D.C., the atmosphere was tense as swing states leaned toward Trump, sparking anxiety among supporters.
Adding to the celebratory mood for Republicans, the party is projected to gain control of the U.S. Senate. According to CBS, Republicans have managed to secure seats in West Virginia and Ohio, two key pickups, while defending competitive seats in Texas. Control of the House of Representatives remains uncertain, with both parties locked in a close contest.
This election is historic, with Vice President Harris, 60, potentially becoming the first woman, Black woman, and South Asian American to serve as U.S. president if she wins. However, Trump, 78, would also make history as the first president to win non-consecutive terms in over a century. Trump was impeached twice and has faced legal challenges during and after his presidency, making his comeback an unprecedented event in U.S. politics.
In an election marked by heightened security, over 30 hoax bomb threats targeted voting locations, particularly in Georgia. Philadelphia's police department dismissed Trump’s social media claims of "massive cheating" in the city, stating there was no evidence to support the allegations. Both campaigns have legal teams on standby, prepared for potential challenges.
While exit poll data from CBS suggested Harris performed well among women, her support did not surpass the level achieved by Joe Biden in 2020. With Harris capturing around 54% of women’s votes, Biden had earned 57% four years prior. The nation remains tense, with law enforcement agencies on high alert for possible unrest.
Regardless of the final outcome, this election underscores the continued divisions within the United States, with each side hoping their candidate will shape the next chapter of American history.
