Nigel Gaisie Supports Philip Agyemang’s Bid to Lead Ghana Freedom Party
Following the passing of Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) founder Akua Donkor, her former running mate, Philip Kwabena Agyemang—known as Roman Fada—has filed to succeed her as the party’s presidential candidate. Donkor, who passed away on October 28 after a brief illness, had been preparing to make her fourth bid for the presidency before her untimely death. The Electoral Commission instructed the party to select a new candidate within ten days, leading Agyemang to step forward.
Popular Ghanaian preacher Nigel Gaisie voiced his support for Agyemang, commending his loyalty and dedication to Donkor and the GFP. Gaisie shared his endorsement on social media, applauding Agyemang’s determination to continue Donkor's mission and expressing his best wishes for the GFP’s future under Agyemang's leadership.
Agyemang’s announcement comes as he aims to fulfill Donkor's vision of a people-focused agenda. In her political career, Donkor gained attention as an assemblywoman for Herman in Ghana’s Eastern Region, which later led her to pursue a presidential bid. Her first attempt to run in 2012 as an independent candidate was unsuccessful, but she remained a well-known political figure and a symbol of resilience in Ghanaian politics.
Donkor’s health deteriorated in late October, beginning with her admission to Nsawam Government Hospital. She was later transferred to Ridge Hospital in Accra, where she passed away. Her family revealed she had experienced breathing difficulties leading up to her death. Her daughter and others close to her expressed sadness over the loss of such a dedicated political figure.
Gaisie’s support for Agyemang comes after he reportedly predicted the death of a 2024 presidential candidate, a prophecy he shared in a September sermon. Following Donkor’s death, the preacher reflected on his prediction, emphasizing the impact of her passing on Ghana’s political landscape.
Agyemang's bid to lead the GFP is seen as a continuation of Donkor’s legacy, aiming to represent ordinary Ghanaians. As Agyemang steps into the role, many of Donkor’s supporters are hopeful that he will carry on her vision and pursue the party’s objectives with dedication.
The GFP’s decision to move forward with Agyemang as its candidate reinforces the party’s resilience and commitment to its founder’s values, ensuring her influence endures in Ghana’s political sphere.
