Speaker of Parliament, of the Republic of Ghana, Rt Hon. Alban Sumana Bagbin, has 'hit the nail right on the head', during his media engagement today.
He criticized both the President of the Republic, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the Judiciary of undermining the nation's Constitution by stalling the passage of the Anti-LGBTQ Bill.
According to him, the judiciary's acceptance and processing of a case relating to the recently passed Anti LGBTQ bill, coupled with the president’s alleged refusal to accept it, sets a concerning precedent in Ghana’s democratic journey.
Speaker at a press conference today Wednesday, November 6, 2024, expressed his disappointment over the increasing tendency of Members of this current Parliament, to 'run' to the Supreme Court to resolve legislative issues; adding that, such actions compromise the integrity of Parliament of Ghana.
The Speaker argued that, the most worrying of the current happening is that, "these proceedings are initiated by some stake holders; even leaders of Parliament, who ought to knows better and are supposed to show loyalty to Parliament rather than the Supreme Court.
“Parliamentarians who are to be loyal to Parliament rather than to the Supreme Court run to the Supreme Court at the slightest opportunity to use it to undermine Parliament. This tendency might be why Parliament is not respected and treated with disdain”. He added.
Speaker Bagbin, further expressed strong concerns over the judiciary's handling of the LGBTQ+ Bill. He believes that the President's refusal to receive the bill, which was duly passed by Parliament, and the judiciary's decision to process suits related to the bill, set a dangerous precedent.
In his statement, he emphasized that both the President and the judiciary have acted against the Constitution and should take responsibility for their actions. He urged them to "confess and repent" for disregarding Ghana's democratic processes.
He stressed that, the issues highlights the complexities of balancing individual rights with societal norms and the role of the judiciary in upholding the Constitution. The judiciary plays a crucial role in ensuring that laws align with constitutional principles, and its decisions can significantly impact societal norms.
