Ghana’s Electoral Commission Presents Final, Certified Voter Register for 2024 Election
The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has announced the completion and certification of the final voters’ register for the 2024 General Elections. In an official statement on November 6, 2024, EC Chairperson Jean Mensa confirmed that the register is now “robust, credible, and certified,” providing assurance of a fair and transparent electoral process for all Ghanaians.
Following a re-exhibition of the provisional register earlier this year, the EC identified and resolved 158 issues that had been flagged by registered voters. This process allowed the EC to rectify errors and verify the accuracy of the data, ensuring a reliable voter list for December’s election. According to Mensa, this final phase was essential for meeting the Commission’s commitment to transparency, accuracy, and electoral credibility.
“Ladies and gentlemen, following the re-exhibition of the provisional voters' register, the Commission received a total of 158 issues from registered voters across the country,” Mensa stated. “I am pleased to note that all the issues have been resolved, and as we speak, we have no further issues regarding the final voters' register for the 2024 General Elections.”
The EC also provided a reporting template for Ghana’s political parties, giving them the opportunity to raise any additional concerns regarding the voters' register. However, according to Mensa, no political party presented further issues, reinforcing the Commission’s confidence in the register’s accuracy.
The certification of the voters’ register is a significant milestone as the country prepares for its upcoming elections on December 7, 2024. The finalized register is expected to help create a fair playing field, providing Ghanaian citizens with a transparent electoral process. With all identified issues resolved and political parties expressing no further concerns, the EC believes the register is fully equipped to support a peaceful, credible, and effective election.
“As you may recall, at that meeting, we provided the political parties with a template to report to the Commission on any issues they had with the revised provisional voters' register,” Mensa explained. “I am again pleased to inform you and the people of Ghana that no political party presented any issues regarding the register for resolution.”
Jean Mensa emphasized that this achievement reflects the EC’s commitment to upholding democratic values through rigorous processes, verification, and engagement with stakeholders. She expressed optimism that this will build public confidence in the integrity of the election process, which has garnered significant national and international interest.
The completion of this final voters’ register underscores the EC's ongoing efforts to establish a transparent and inclusive electoral environment. As Ghanaians prepare to go to the polls, the EC’s latest assurance is expected to play a key role in promoting a fair and peaceful voting experience for all.
