Rt Hon. Alban Sumana Bagbin, Speaker of Parliament of Ghana, has sent a direct message to the Supreme Court of Ghana, saying they should stop interfering into Parliamentary functions.
Speaking at a press conference today Wednesday, November 6, 2024 Speaker Alban Bagbin urged the Supreme Court led by the Chief Justice, to tackle the Human Rights and Family Values Bill, also known as the Anti-LGBTQ+ bill, with the same urgency and speed they showed in resolving the vacant parliamentary seats issue. This bill has been pending for almost a year, and Bagbin wants the Court to demonstrate consistency in their handling of important cases.
Speaker added that, “I respectfully call on the Supreme Court to apply the same swiftness with which they attended to the ex parte application to the case involving the president’s refusal to receive the Human Rights And Family Values Bill passed by Parliament which has been pending before the same court for almost a year”.
The Rt Hon., whiles addressing questions from the press, criticized what he sees as inconsistencies in the Court’s approach. He noted that, while the judiciary acted swiftly to prevent four Members of Parliament from serving their constituents for 12 weeks, it was less responsive to ensuring representation for the people of Assin North, Santrakofi, Akpafu, Lolobi, Likpe (SALL), and other areas affected by similar legal matters.
He explained further that, “The court could not enjoin four members of Parliament from serving their constituents for 12 weeks but was very eager to deny the constituents of Assin North their representation because of their issue of allegiance.
He added that, “The Court cannot deny the constituents of SALL, the sanctity of representation for years. The Court cannot even see that the constitution itself permits a denial of representation within three months to the holding of a general election”.
