MAKAZOLE MAPIMPI: A RUGBY LEGEND INSPIRING FUTURE GENERATIONS

Makazole Mapimpi's rugby journey is nothing short of inspiring, marked by resilience, humility, and a deep desire to uplift others. As one of the most celebrated Springboks, Mapimpi’s achievements on the field have etched his name into rugby history, particularly with his iconic try in the 2019 World Cup final—South Africa’s first-ever try in a World Cup final, made possible by a brilliant assist from his long-time teammate, Lukhanyo Am. However, as Mapimpi approaches the twilight of his international career at 34, he is shifting his focus towards a meaningful future beyond rugby.

Acknowledging the inevitable passage of time, Mapimpi speaks candidly about the likelihood of not being part of the 2027 World Cup squad, where he would be 37 years old. He understands the physical demands of the sport, especially in his position as a winger, a role that demands speed and agility. “I’ll be 37, and I need to be honest with myself,” he admits, emphasizing the importance of being realistic about his career longevity. While some forwards may continue playing at that age, for a backline player like Mapimpi, the expectations are different. Nonetheless, he remains committed to giving his best while still representing the Springboks, aware that each match could be his last opportunity to don the jersey.

Mapimpi’s contributions extend beyond statistics and caps, though he nears the milestone of 50 caps for South Africa. His approach has always been about quality over quantity, recognizing that his role now involves guiding the younger generation of players coming through the ranks. “I can’t block the talent that is coming through the ranks,” he reflects. He acknowledges the cycle of rugby, where players before him paved the way, and now it’s his turn to support and mentor the rising stars.

Off the field, Mapimpi’s commitment to making a difference is evident through his foundation, aptly named the Mapimpi Foundation. Established four years ago, it reflects his life journey, growing up in poverty-stricken Mdantsane where he played barefoot and struggled for basic necessities. The foundation initially focused on providing essentials like boots and rugby balls to underprivileged kids but has grown into an organization aimed at broader issues, including education and combating gender-based violence. “I used to walk to school without shoes,” Mapimpi recalls, underscoring the challenges he faced growing up and the empathy that drives him to give back. By using his platform, he hopes to inspire and provide opportunities for children who face similar struggles.

His story of perseverance—from being raised by his grandmother after the loss of his mother and siblings, to being overlooked in provincial rugby until his late debut at 27—is well-documented in "Chasing the Sun" and other media. Despite these challenges, he emerged as a force in South African rugby, proving that hard work and determination can overcome the steepest odds.

While Mapimpi’s on-field legacy is secure, he envisions his true impact extending far beyond rugby. His work to nurture young talent and address social issues stands to be his most significant contribution. He is determined that his legacy will be defined not just by the historic try in Yokohama but by the lives he changes and the hope he inspires. For Mapimpi, the journey after rugby promises to be just as impactful as the one that brought him to global acclaim.
