When will Thomas Tuchel begin as England manager? Why the new manager misses Nations League matches.
Thomas Tuchel was unveiled as the new England manager last month, but he won't officially start work until next year, so Lee Carsley will remain in charge of England's upcoming Nations League games.
England fans are anticipating a new era after Thomas Tuchel was announced as the new Three Lions manager last month, but they will have to wait a little longer for his first match.
The German was announced as the surprise successor to Gareth Southgate following England's agonising defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final this summer, with the FA looking to bring in a household name who could win the World Cup in 2026.
However, Tuchel will not begin work until next year, leaving Lee Carsley in charge of England's upcoming Nations League games against Greece and the Republic of Ireland.
Mirror Football explains when the former Chelsea coach will start working as England manager and why he will miss the next set of matches during the international break.
When is Tuchel's official start date as England manager?
Tuchel's reign as England manager will begin on January 1, 2025, with the 51-year-old's primary goal of leading the country to victory in the 2026 World Cup.
England will need to qualify for the tournament, and the date of the draw has yet to be determined, but until then, their primary focus will be on the Nations League and their bid to return to League A.
It may surprise some that Tuchel was not brought in immediately to work on the upcoming games against Greece and Ireland, but his contract states that he will begin his role at the beginning of next year.
Why isn't he in charge of the Greek and Irish games?
The FA has consistently stated that the plan was for Carsley to finish England's Nations League campaign, with Tuchel ushering in a new era in preparation for the World Cup.
According to Chief Mark Bullingham, Tuchel made it clear that starting in the new year worked better for his schedule.
"I think we always said to Lee he would have three camps and we were very clear he would run the Nations League campaign," he told me. "I believe when we first spoke with Thomas, he wanted to focus solely on the World Cup. So it made sense for both sides to begin on January 1."
