Conor Benn has been cleared of any doping violations by the National Anti-Doping Panel (NADP) after a lengthy and contentious investigation into two failed drug tests in 2022. The British boxer had tested positive for clomifene, a fertility drug that can increase testosterone levels, which led to his highly anticipated match against Chris Eubank Jr. being canceled.
The bout, scheduled for October 2022 at London's O2 Arena, was one of the most talked-about in British boxing, given the fierce rivalry between the two fighters and the history of their fathers, Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank Sr., who had fought twice in the 1990s.
As a result of the positive tests, Benn had his boxing license revoked by the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBoC), and his career was put on hold. Although his provisional suspension was lifted by the NADP in July 2023, the suspension was reinstated after an appeal by UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) and the BBBoC. However, following a thorough review, the NADP ruled that UKAD had not provided sufficient evidence to confirm that Benn had knowingly committed a doping offence, and they cleared him of all charges.
In response to the ruling, Benn took to social media, expressing his relief and gratitude. "This past 24 months has unquestionably been the toughest fight of my life," he said, referring to the emotional and professional toll the controversy had taken on him. Benn has consistently maintained his innocence throughout the ordeal and emphasized his passion for clean sport. The boxer now hopes to return to the ring in the UK, resuming his career after a turbulent period.
However, UKAD has indicated that it will review the NADP's decision and may appeal further. If the ruling stands, Benn could resume his boxing career with the potential for a highly anticipated rematch with Eubank Jr., which would reignite their family’s long-standing rivalry.
