Bagbin Adjourns Parliament Indefinitely Due to Absence of NPP MPs

Accra, Ghana – Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has indefinitely adjourned the house proceedings due to the continued absence of Members of Parliament (MPs) from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP). The lack of quorum caused by the NPP MPs’ absence has hindered progress on essential national issues, forcing the Speaker to take this unexpected decision.

Bagbin expressed deep disappointment over the persistent failure of NPP members to attend sittings, especially given the urgent legislative agenda awaiting attention. With the parliamentary session slated to discuss critical bills and reforms necessary for Ghana’s economic recovery, the Speaker emphasized that the commitment of MPs from both sides of the aisle is vital. “Parliament is the bedrock of our democracy,” Bagbin stated. “We cannot conduct the people's business if those entrusted with it are absent.”

The indefinite adjournment highlights a broader issue with attendance in Parliament. Over the past few weeks, NPP MPs have frequently been missing from key sessions, even when important matters, such as the 2024 budget review, were on the agenda. This recurring absenteeism has effectively stalled debates on several pressing issues and has frustrated the Minority MPs, who have argued that the situation undermines the government’s accountability. One opposition MP noted, “It is a dereliction of duty for any representative to continuously neglect their legislative responsibilities. Ghanaian citizens deserve better from their leaders.”

With Ghana grappling with economic and social challenges, political analysts have raised concerns over the implications of this adjournment. The inability of Parliament to function effectively at such a critical time could delay policies essential for stabilizing the economy, providing relief to citizens, and addressing infrastructure needs. Many observers worry that this disruption might have far-reaching effects on governance and public trust in the nation's political institutions.

The Speaker’s decision places considerable pressure on the NPP MPs to re-evaluate their priorities and renew their commitment to the legislative process. The situation has also sparked conversations across Ghana about the accountability of elected officials. Social media platforms and public forums are abuzz with citizens calling for increased transparency and discipline among MPs.

As the indefinite adjournment takes effect, Bagbin has urged all members to uphold the responsibilities of their mandate, stressing that their primary duty is to serve the Ghanaian people who placed them in office.
