Tensions Rise in Ghana's Parliament as Majority Leadership Criticizes Speaker’s Conduct
Alexander Afenyo-Markin, leader of Ghana's New Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus and Member of Parliament for Effutu, has expressed frustration over recent events in parliament, particularly concerning Speaker Alban Bagbin’s handling of parliamentary order. Afenyo-Markin has accused the Speaker of allowing chaos to unfold within the parliamentary chamber, suggesting that Bagbin is enabling members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucus to disregard parliamentary norms and procedures.
The current unrest began when NDC legislators chose to occupy seats designated for the majority side during an emergency parliamentary session on November 7, 2024. This session was convened following a controversial decision by Speaker Bagbin to adjourn parliament indefinitely, a move that the NPP found problematic. The Deputy Majority Whip, Alex Tetteh Djornobuah, had called for the emergency recall, but many NPP MPs were notably absent from the session, which ultimately led to another adjournment.
In a press briefing held on November 7, Afenyo-Markin strongly criticized the Speaker’s stance, describing it as “non-reconciliatory” and alleging that Bagbin’s actions threaten the stability of Ghana’s democratic processes. “The Speaker is setting the country on fire,” he claimed, underscoring his disappointment in Bagbin’s unwillingness to mediate between the two parties or work towards a resolution that would restore order in the House.
Afenyo-Markin expressed particular concern that Bagbin’s handling of the situation could harm Ghana’s democratic framework. "Mr. Speaker is hurting democracy,” he stated, noting that although the NPP caucus had reservations about Bagbin’s election as Speaker, they respected his position. However, he argued that Bagbin’s approach now appears to contradict his own stated commitment to upholding the constitution, raising questions about his objectivity and leadership.
The NPP leader called for a renewed commitment to parliamentary decorum, urging Bagbin to embrace a more statesmanlike approach. This appeal reflects broader concerns within the NPP about maintaining a stable and lawful legislative environment, especially amid rising political tensions between Ghana’s two main parties.
The parliamentary session adjourned without significant progress, leaving questions about when or how the NPP and NDC will reconcile these differences. Both parties continue to navigate Ghana's complex political landscape, and the latest tensions illustrate the challenges of maintaining effective governance amid stark partisan divides.
This recent impasse marks a critical moment in Ghanaian politics, where the roles and responsibilities of parliamentary leaders, particularly the Speaker, face increasing scrutiny from both sides of the aisle. It remains to be seen how Bagbin will address these accusations and whether he will take steps to restore confidence and order in parliament.
