Nana Akufo Addo Statue: Ghanaians React as President Unveils Controversial Statue Amid Unfinished Regional Projects
Ghanaians have responded with mixed reactions after President Nana Akufo-Addo recently unveiled a statue of himself at the entrance of the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi. The statue, part of Akufo-Addo’s "thank you" tour in the Western Region, was promoted by the government as a tribute to his achievements in the area, such as the partial rehabilitation of the hospital and ongoing infrastructure projects like the three-tier Sinohydro interchange and the redevelopment of Takoradi Market Circle.
Many Ghanaians, however, criticized the statue, particularly given the region's lingering infrastructure challenges and unfinished projects. Social media users were quick to comment on what they perceived as a misprioritization, with some questioning why resources were allocated to a statue while hospital upgrades and other critical regional improvements remain incomplete. One of the loudest criticisms came from those who viewed the statue as an act of self-aggrandizement, with opposition leaders and citizens arguing it was not the right time for such a display. Several critics even suggested that the statue should be removed after Akufo-Addo leaves office, underscoring widespread frustration over unfinished public projects.
On the other hand, some supporters defended the monument, interpreting it as recognition of the president’s contributions, especially the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, which he touted as his most important legacy. Akufo-Addo highlighted that he had fulfilled 80% of his campaign promises, encouraging citizens to support Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming election to continue his policies and complete ongoing projects.
This reaction highlights a broader divide in public sentiment as Ghanaians reflect on Akufo-Addo’s administration and its legacy. While his supporters emphasize the administration’s achievements, critics focus on unfinished projects, with some viewing the statue as emblematic of unfulfilled commitments in the Western Region and beyond.
