Kusasis Appeal to President Akufo-Addo to Restore Peace in Bawku Before Leaving Office
Bawku, Ghana – November 8, 2024
The Kusasi people have made a heartfelt appeal to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, urging him to prioritize and intensify efforts to restore peace in Bawku before the end of his presidential term. The people of Bawku, a historically vibrant region in Ghana's Upper East, have faced tensions and conflict in recent years, affecting the livelihoods and stability of its residents.
As President Akufo-Addo approaches the conclusion of his tenure, the Kusasi community, represented by various traditional and community leaders, emphasized the urgent need for peace and security in the region. With its economic potential and diverse cultural heritage, Bawku is a crucial area for fostering socio-economic growth and national cohesion, making it essential for peace to prevail.
In their plea, the Kusasi leaders called upon the government to build upon recent security initiatives and continue to work closely with local leaders, security agencies, and other stakeholders. They stressed that effective collaboration and active mediation are necessary to achieve sustainable peace in the region. They also highlighted that the insecurity in Bawku has had wide-reaching impacts, particularly in terms of economic disruption, limited access to education and healthcare, and overall social fragmentation.
The Chief of Bawku, Naaba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, has been at the forefront of advocating for peace, frequently calling upon residents to work together for unity and harmony. He has consistently maintained that the well-being of the Kusaug people and Bawku’s progress depends on an environment free from conflict. His recent interactions with community members, government officials, and security personnel have underscored his commitment to ensuring Bawku becomes a safe and thriving part of Ghana once more.
Security personnel, working in coordination with the Regional Security Council (REGSEC), have intensified efforts to safeguard the area. The involvement of the REGSEC team, along with local intelligence-sharing initiatives, has shown some promising improvements in stability. However, the Kusasis emphasize that the ultimate goal is lasting peace, which can only be achieved through continuous dialogue, reconciliation, and government-backed support.
Citizens of Bawku remain hopeful that President Akufo-Addo, who has made notable contributions to national security, will leave a legacy of peace in their community. As the country prepares for future leadership, the Kusasi people believe that a peaceful Bawku is integral to national unity and Ghana's future prosperity.
