Why 'B*stards of Barcelona'? Lamine Yamal and Alejandro Balde 'didn't help Nico Williams amid the summer transfer saga.
Nico Williams, the talented Spanish winger, has recently shared a lighthearted remark about how his international teammates, Lamine Yamal and Alejandro Balde, “didn’t help” him during the transfer speculation that surrounded him this past summer. Williams, who impressed during Spain's Euro 2024 campaign, was the subject of intense rumors linking him with a move away from Athletic Club, with Barcelona among the clubs reportedly interested in securing his services.
Following his standout performances for Spain, the 22-year-old winger was touted for a potential high-profile transfer, with the possibility of joining Barcelona appearing increasingly likely at one stage. Both Yamal and Balde, fellow Spanish internationals at Barcelona, were regularly in touch with Williams during this period. However, the Athletic Club star jokes that their communications did little to ease the pressure of the transfer speculation.
“It was tough,” Williams explained in an interview with La Revuelta. “On top of everything else, those ‘bastards’ Lamine and Balde from Barcelona kept texting me all the time, telling me ‘come now, brother, come now.’ It was all just winding me up.”
Despite the playful banter from his national team colleagues, Williams ultimately decided to stay at Athletic Club for at least another season, turning down the potential move to Barcelona. The deal never materialized, and Barcelona eventually signed Dani Olmo instead, leaving Williams to continue his development in Bilbao.
While he admitted that the constant barrage of messages from friends at Barcelona added to the stress of the situation, Williams also shared that he still receives a variety of messages from fans and the media. “Even now, I get messages telling me to go to Barcelona, but others tell me they don’t need me anymore,” he said, reflecting on how the ongoing transfer speculation continues to follow him.
Though the Barcelona move didn’t happen, Williams has also been linked with Premier League clubs, with top English teams expressing interest in his talents. The winger's future remains uncertain, but it is widely expected that he will eventually seek a new challenge, whether in Spain or abroad. For now, Williams appears focused on his current role at Athletic Club, but the transfer rumors are unlikely to subside anytime soon.
