National Peace Council Calls for Restraint and Cooperation Among Bawku Conflict Parties
The National Peace Council (NPC) has urged all parties involved in the ongoing conflict in Bawku to exercise restraint and work towards a peaceful resolution. In a recent statement, the NPC emphasized the need for collaboration and understanding, appealing to the leaders and members of the communities to put an end to violence and work together for a lasting peace.
The Bawku conflict, which has been ongoing for several years, involves tensions between ethnic groups in the area. The conflict has escalated at various points, leading to loss of lives, displacement of families, and disruption of economic activities. This has not only affected Bawku but also has had a ripple effect on neighboring areas, impacting the entire Kusaug region.
As part of its peacebuilding mandate, the NPC has deployed a team to engage with traditional leaders, local authorities, and community members in Bawku. According to the council, these discussions aim to foster mutual respect and promote the principles of peaceful coexistence. The NPC called on the residents to refrain from actions that could aggravate tensions and urged them to resolve their differences through dialogue and negotiation rather than violence.
The NPC acknowledged the challenges faced by the security personnel on the ground and commended their efforts to maintain law and order. It further appealed to the residents to cooperate fully with security agencies and avoid actions that could hinder their work or put the lives of security personnel at risk. "It is crucial for both sides to understand that the presence of security forces is to protect lives and property and not to favor any particular side," the statement said.
In addition to the NPC’s efforts, other stakeholders, including the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) and various civil society organizations, have been working to create an environment conducive to peace. The NPC stressed that a multi-stakeholder approach is essential, with traditional leaders, religious authorities, women’s groups, and youth representatives all playing key roles in promoting understanding and finding sustainable solutions.
The NPC concluded its statement with a call for both parties to prioritize peace and unity over divisive interests. “We believe that peace is possible in Bawku if all parties commit to open dialogue and recognize the value of coexistence. We urge everyone involved to take steps that demonstrate a commitment to lasting peace in the region,” the NPC advised.
With the ongoing Samanpiid festival and other significant community events approaching, the NPC emphasized that such occasions should serve as reminders of the need for unity, calling on the people of Bawku to uphold their cultural values in ways that bring the community closer.
