Western Region Honors President Akufo-Addo with a Statue for Development Contributions

The Upper Dixcove Traditional Council, led by Obrempon Hima Dekyi XIV, has clarified public misconceptions surrounding the unveiling of a life-sized statue of President Akufo-Addo at the Effia-Nkwanta roundabout. In a press release on November 8, 2024, the Council stated that the statue was a gesture of gratitude to the president for his administration’s substantial investments in the Western Region.

Obrempon Dekyi explained that while President Akufo-Addo was invited to the unveiling ceremony, he did not personally unveil the statue. The task was carried out by Nana Kwesi Agyeman IX, the paramount chief of Lower Dixcove, along with other respected chiefs. This statue, he emphasized, symbolizes a longstanding tradition among the region’s chiefs to honor individuals who make notable contributions to local development.

The Council highlighted key projects initiated under President Akufo-Addo’s administration that have positively impacted the region’s infrastructure, healthcare, transportation, and education sectors. Major initiatives include the ongoing rehabilitation of the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital, the construction of a three-tier interchange in Takoradi, the resurfacing of the Tarkwa-Takoradi road, and the redevelopment of Takoradi’s Market Circle. Each of these projects is part of a larger push to modernize the region and enhance public services for its residents.

Additional projects funded by the government in the Western Region include the construction of the Dixcove Fishing Harbour, Axim Mini Harbour, and the Atlantic Port in Takoradi. Healthcare improvements include new hospitals in Elubo, Bogoso, and Wassa, as well as multiple Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds across the area. Education has also seen significant expansion under the Free Senior High School program, with new and upgraded facilities across the region.

According to Obrempon Dekyi, the chiefs, referred to as the “Nananom,” chose to commission the statue as a way to express appreciation and encourage continued investment in the region. This tradition of honoring regional contributors serves as a reminder that positive development can lead to further support and growth. He cited local wisdom, which suggests that showing gratitude can foster additional blessings and opportunities.

In response to some of the critical reports in the media, the Council urged Ghanaians, especially those from the Western Region, to maintain a balanced view and acknowledge the development strides made by the current administration. The Council also called on all citizens to contribute to fostering unity and peaceful democratic processes.

This tribute to President Akufo-Addo, they hope, will inspire future leaders to prioritize regional development, ensuring that the Western Region continues on a path of progress and prosperity.
