Bawku Crisis: Kusaug Traditional Council Lifts Suspension of NPP Activities Despite Government's Inaction on Seidu Abagre Arrest

The Kusaug Traditional Council has announced its decision to lift the suspension of political activities by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Bawku, despite the government’s failure to arrest Seidu Abagre, a fugitive involved in the ongoing crisis in the region. This decision marks a significant development in the prolonged instability affecting Bawku and surrounding areas in the Kusaug Traditional Territory.

For months, the Traditional Council has been calling on the government to take swift action against individuals contributing to the unrest, with a particular focus on Seidu Abagre. Abagre, who has evaded arrest, is alleged to be a central figure in instigating violence and discord in the area. The Council’s request for his capture was seen as a necessary measure to restore peace, yet the government has so far not acted decisively on the matter. This inaction has fueled resentment among locals who feel their concerns have been sidelined despite the impact of the crisis on their daily lives and livelihoods.

The Council previously suspended all political activities by the NPP in Bawku, as it viewed the party’s actions and associations as potentially exacerbating tensions in the region. In a statement issued earlier, the Council emphasized that it could not condone political movements that, intentionally or unintentionally, worsened the fragile security situation. The decision to restrict NPP activities was a bid to maintain order and prevent any politically motivated incidents from further destabilizing the area.

However, recent developments led the Council to lift the suspension, signaling a change in strategy. According to spokespersons from the Council, the decision does not imply that the issues surrounding Seidu Abagre have been forgotten but reflects a need for broader engagement and community stability. The Council expressed disappointment at the lack of progress on its demands but acknowledged the importance of fostering a spirit of unity and open dialogue across political divides.

"We are lifting the ban on NPP activities in Bawku to allow all stakeholders to contribute to peace in our region," a Council representative said. "This decision also encourages government and political actors to recognize the urgency of addressing unresolved security threats that persist."

While some community members have voiced concerns that lifting the suspension may send a mixed message to those seeking justice and peace, others hope that the move will bring fresh impetus to efforts aimed at finding long-term solutions to the crisis. The Kusaug Traditional Council remains adamant, however, that its calls for justice and accountability are far from over. It has urged the government to take immediate steps to apprehend Seidu Abagre, reinforcing the message that peace cannot be achieved without holding perpetrators accountable.

The situation in Bawku remains delicate, and the Council’s recent decision underscores its commitment to balancing peace with the quest for justice in a challenging environment.
