FORMER PRESIDENT KUFUOR URGES SPEAKER BAGBIN TO RESOLVE PARLIAMENTARY STALEMATE

Former Ghanaian President John Agyekum Kufuor has urged the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to lead in resolving the ongoing parliamentary stalemate that is affecting government proceedings. According to Kufuor, the responsibility for navigating the situation lies with Speaker Bagbin, whose leadership could foster unity between the two main political parties, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), for the benefit of the country.

The impasse, which has prevented the Ghanaian Parliament from conducting business, led Speaker Bagbin to adjourn proceedings indefinitely. This decision followed the absence of NPP Members of Parliament, which created a lack of quorum needed to continue parliamentary business. In his remarks, Bagbin expressed disappointment over the situation, noting that Parliament was unable to move forward due to the absence of sufficient members and limited business on the agenda.

In an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen Show, Kufuor emphasized that Bagbin’s intervention could be instrumental in resolving the dispute and maintaining parliamentary operations. He highlighted that a peaceful and cooperative Parliament is crucial for government functionality and urged Bagbin to bring both the NPP and NDC caucuses together to work toward Ghana's growth and the citizens' best interests.

Kufuor’s appeal to Speaker Bagbin underscores the critical role of Parliament in ensuring that government policies are effectively debated and implemented. He also pointed out that the ongoing tension and division between the two political factions could jeopardize important legislative work that impacts the country's development. Therefore, the former president is calling on Bagbin to employ his position and influence to mediate the disagreements and restore cooperation in the House.

The indefinite adjournment of Parliament has raised concerns among citizens who worry that prolonged disruptions could stall important government decisions and policies. The current impasse not only affects day-to-day parliamentary activities but also hampers the government’s ability to address pressing national issues.

Kufuor’s remarks also reflect a broader expectation that leaders in key government positions should prioritize national unity and collaboration over political partisanship. Many believe that a balanced and effective legislative process is vital for Ghana’s governance and that maintaining it requires cooperation from all parliamentary representatives, regardless of party affiliation.

Speaker Bagbin’s ability to bring together the opposing parties in Parliament is seen as essential to maintaining democratic processes and fulfilling Parliament's role in shaping Ghana's future. As Ghanaians wait for the resolution of the stalemate, there is a collective hope that Parliament will soon resume its operations, allowing elected officials to address the nation’s challenges.
