World No. 2 Alexander Zverev expressed immense satisfaction with his performances in 2024, marking a triumphant return to form after a challenging period marred by injury. The German tennis star endured a significant setback during the 2022 French Open, where he sustained severe ligament damage to his ankle that sidelined him for months. His return to the top echelons of the sport has been nothing short of remarkable, silencing any lingering doubts about his ability to reclaim his position among tennis’s elite.
Zverev’s journey back to peak performance has been underscored by significant victories and consistent displays of high-level tennis. His standout achievements this season include a hard-fought victory at the Paris Masters, a milestone that propelled him back to his career-high ranking of No. 2. Additionally, Zverev claimed another prestigious title at the Italian Open in May and made a commendable run to the final of the French Open. These accomplishments collectively highlighted his resilience and determination to return stronger than before.
Reflecting on his progress, Zverev admitted that 2023 was a year of rebuilding and adaptation, where he struggled to be truly competitive in major tournaments. “In 2023, I didn't feel like I was competitive in big events; I was far away from winning them,” he told ATP Media. The 2024 season, however, has been a turning point. “Being able to compete and make Grand Slam finals, win Masters 1000 events, that is a big satisfaction to me because there were obviously question marks if I was ever going to do that again after the injury,” Zverev noted. The return to consistent competition and high-level victories has renewed his confidence and reaffirmed his status as one of the most formidable players on the ATP Tour.
As Zverev prepares for the ATP Finals in Turin, he acknowledges the challenges that lie ahead. The week-long event, showcasing the top eight singles players and doubles teams, will test his skills from the very first match. Zverev is set to face world No. 9 Andrey Rublev in his opening encounter, followed by matches against four-time Grand Slam winner Carlos Alcaraz and Norway’s Casper Ruud. Speaking about the competition, Zverev emphasized the need for immediate focus. “I think coming in and playing one of the best eight players in the world straight off is a very difficult thing to do. You have to be focused, you have to be ready from the get-go,” he said.
Commenting on his initial opponent, Rublev, Zverev described him as a “powerful, extremely fast player” who excels at imposing his aggressive game. “He tries to overpower you. The most important thing against him is to not let him,” he added, underscoring the strategic preparation required to handle Rublev’s intense playing style.
Zverev’s remarkable journey from injury to resurgence has been a testament to his mental and physical fortitude. With renewed momentum, he heads into the ATP Finals looking to add another prestigious title to his impressive resume, showcasing the perseverance and skill that have defined his season.
