Ghana has since the beginning of the Fourth Republic in 1992 held competitive multiparty elections and undergone peaceful transfers of power between between the two main political parties; the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The upcoming general elections which will be held on December 7 2024, seek to elect president and 275 members of Parliament. The current President Nana Akufo-Addo is term-limited and ineligible to run again.
This year’s election is not just unique but also promises to be a tough race. Despite the fact that 12 political parties are involved, the country is a de facto two-party system. The two main parties are the New Patriotic Party and the National Democratic Congress; and the leading contenders for the race are the incumbent Vice President, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and former President John Dramani Mahama, from the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
In about 27 days to general elections 2024, Ghanaians as always, has been holding opposing views when it comes to who wins the elections. There are those who support the ex-President John Dramani Mahama's journey of change and those who supports election of the sitting Vice president, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumi.
In the recent Facebook Opinion Polls aimed at finding out from respondents; their views on the topic; "Who Is A Better Choice For The Presidency 2025", the following results were compiled:
John Dramani Mahama- 1,637 (51.90%).
Dr. Mahamadu Bawumi: - 1,323 (41.95%).
Others- 194 (6.15%).
Total number of respondents were 3,155, as at November 07, 2024.
The report suggests, that more Ghanaians are calling for change; and return of former President John Mahama.
