The National Democratic Congress National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, has opened a blistering attack on the presidential bid of the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for 2024, comparing him to that of US Vice President Kamala Harris, recently at a press briefing. This was critical of the core of Bawumia's campaign strategy, which he described as being dominated by symbolic actions devoid of substance in policy proposals and effective leadership.

In fact, Gyamfi compares Bawumia's rise within the New Patriotic Party to Harris' rise in the United States. Each of these, according to Gyamfi, has been so promoted for reasons not related to their political skills but primarily because of their demographic appeal-to wit, Bawumia's being a northern Muslim and Harris the first female vice president of color. Gyamfi believes that, equally, the reason behind Bawumia's presidency is more because of his ethnic and regional background than out of any serious policy differences or leadership credentials.

"The Bawumia campaign is mirroring the Kamala Harris playbook-relying on identity politics and a carefully crafted image, rather than presenting a concrete plan for the future of the nation," said Gyamfi. "He hasn't addressed the deteriorating economy of the country and also hasn't come out with what exactly he would do to solve most of the pressing issues facing Ghanaians now," said Gyamfi.

Gyamfi also accused the vice president of what he described as "a lack of depth" in his political promises. He explained that Bawumia, like Harris, relies on optics and slogans to appeal to people, instead of building a robust policy platform that resonates with the people.

That campaign, marked by frequent references to his leading role in the Akufo-Addo administration's economic policies, critics like Gyamfi point out is the very same set of policies that have led to spiraling inflation, debt, and unemployment-and erode his credibility as a candidate of change.

But with the 2024 elections looming, what remains to be seen is whether Bawumia would be able to look beyond the criticisms of his detractors and convince Ghanaians that he was the leader they so desperately needed at such a time.
