Phil Salt delivered a stunning performance as England secured a comprehensive eight-wicket victory over the West Indies in their opening Twenty20 clash at Kensington Oval on Saturday. The dynamic opener showcased his prowess with the bat, scoring an unbeaten 103 off just 54 balls in an impressive display that included nine fours and six sixes. Salt’s explosive innings powered England to chase down a target of 183 with 19 balls remaining, finishing at 183-2 in the 17th over.

Salt, who seems to have a particular affinity for playing in the Caribbean, continued his run of impressive form at these venues. This innings marked his third T20 international century, all of which have been scored against the West Indies on Caribbean soil. Reflecting on his success, Salt said, "I enjoy batting here – I've grown up on these surfaces. It's probably the place I'm happiest."

England's chase was set up with an aggressive start, highlighted by Salt's domination in the fourth over where he dismantled Shamar Joseph's bowling, scoring 24 runs and propelling England to 52-0. Alongside Salt, Jacob Bethell, who was born in Barbados and moved to England at the age of 12, played an equally compelling knock. Bethell scored an unbeaten 58 from 36 deliveries, which featured five fours and two sixes, much to the delight of his friends and family present at the ground.

Earlier in the match, the West Indies managed a competitive total of 182-9, largely thanks to a late surge from their lower order. Andre Russell’s powerful 30 off 17 balls, combined with Romario Shepherd’s unbeaten 35 from 22 balls and Gudakesh Motie’s rapid 33 off 14, added crucial runs in the final overs. Despite their efforts, the hosts struggled to maintain momentum against a disciplined English bowling attack.

Saqib Mahmood stood out with figures of 4-34 in his four overs, making key breakthroughs that stunted the West Indies’ progress. Adil Rashid also contributed effectively, claiming 3-32 from his allotted overs.

England's commanding win set a strong tone for the series, with game two of the five-match series scheduled for Sunday in Bridgetown. The victory not only reinforced England’s T20 credentials but also highlighted Salt's status as a formidable force in the shorter format, especially in Caribbean conditions.
