Australia's opening lineup against India has taken a fresh turn as 25-year-old Nathan McSweeney is set to open in the first of five tests, which kicks off in Perth on November 22. The decision comes as Australia searches for a strong partner for Usman Khawaja following David Warner's retirement earlier this year. While Steve Smith initially filled the role, he did not deliver the expected results and will now return to his reliable No. 4 position, directly behind Marnus Labuschagne.
McSweeney’s selection follows an impressive domestic season and standout performances in recent Australia A matches. The South Australian captain caught the selectors' attention during a "bat-off" series against India A. Despite mixed results—scoring an unbeaten 88 in Mackay before moderate showings in Melbourne—McSweeney’s resilience and consistent form earned him the nod.
Chief selector George Bailey emphasized McSweeney’s readiness: "Nathan has displayed the attributes we believe will equip him well for test cricket along with a strong recent record in domestic cricket. His performances for South Australia and Australia A weighed in his favor and support our view that he is ready for the opportunity at test level."
In addition to McSweeney, Australia’s squad features the return of Josh Inglis, who, despite not being considered as an opener, has secured a place as a backup batsman due to his strong performances in the Sheffield Shield. This selection means he will join the team alongside the experienced Alex Carey, who will handle wicketkeeping duties.
Travis Head is expected to slot into the No. 5 position, while Mitchell Marsh will take over the allrounder role following Cameron Green's absence due to spinal surgery. The veteran fast-bowling trio of Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc will lead the bowling attack, supported by seasoned spinner Nathan Lyon, who is set to play his 130th test and add to his impressive 530-wicket tally. Scott Boland rounds out the bowling contingent as the spare quick, with Michael Neser sidelined due to injury.
The Border-Gavaskar series promises to be fiercely competitive, with matches scheduled across iconic venues including Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney after the opener in Perth.
