Akufo-Addo to Commission Flower Pot Interchange on November 19
In a major development for Accra’s infrastructure, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is set to commission the highly anticipated Flower Pot Interchange on November 19. This new interchange, located in the heart of the East Legon area, is poised to ease traffic congestion and boost accessibility to some of Accra’s most frequented neighborhoods, providing much-needed relief to both residents and commuters.
The Flower Pot Interchange, a project that has been underway for several years, was initiated under the Akufo-Addo administration as part of its ambitious urban infrastructure drive aimed at transforming Accra into a world-class city. The new interchange is designed to handle the increasing traffic volume in the area, especially as Accra has experienced rapid urbanization and population growth in recent years. Once operational, the interchange will connect several major routes, significantly reducing travel times for drivers moving between East Legon, the Airport Residential Area, and the Central Business District.
According to the Ministry of Roads and Highways, the project is part of the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area Road Initiative. The initiative aims to alleviate chronic congestion at major intersections, thereby improving the flow of traffic and reducing the environmental impact caused by vehicle emissions from frequent traffic stops. Engineers have employed advanced road construction technology and materials for durability, ensuring the interchange will meet international standards and remain in optimal condition for years to come.
The Flower Pot Interchange features multiple tiers of flyovers and ramps that seamlessly link the main arterial roads in the area, allowing vehicles to travel without interruptions. The design is expected to not only benefit daily commuters but also support commercial activities by improving access to key business and retail centers in the vicinity. Additionally, provisions for pedestrian walkways and enhanced landscaping have been incorporated to ensure the interchange is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
In his recent address, President Akufo-Addo emphasized his government’s commitment to building resilient infrastructure as a foundation for economic growth. "The Flower Pot Interchange will serve as a model for future projects, showing that we are committed to delivering on our promises of modern infrastructure that drives development and connects communities," he stated. He also expressed appreciation to the project’s stakeholders, including engineers, contractors, and local authorities, for their dedication to meeting the project timeline despite challenges.
The commissioning ceremony on November 19 is expected to draw key government officials, industry stakeholders, and community leaders. Residents of East Legon and surrounding areas have expressed optimism about the project’s potential to improve the area’s quality of life. “This interchange will make a huge difference,” said Ama Owusu, a business owner in the area. “We’ve been waiting for this, and we’re looking forward to seeing the improvements it will bring.”
With the Flower Pot Interchange’s completion, Accra’s transportation network is taking a significant step forward in addressing urban mobility issues, and the government remains dedicated to replicating this success in other parts of the city to foster sustainable urban growth.
