President Akufo-Addo is set to inaugurate the Flower Pot Interchange in Accra on November 19, 2024, as announced by Eugene Arhin, the Presidency’s Communications Director. This new infrastructure is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion and improve connectivity along the busy Spintex Road corridor, serving as a vital link between North and South Accra.
Designed as an 800-meter flyover starting from the Palace Mall on Spintex Road and extending to Boundary Road in East Legon, the Flower Pot Interchange is intended to provide a more efficient travel route for commuters. The flyover includes ramps connecting the motorway, easing travel from Burma Camp and other areas of Accra East toward East Legon. This enhancement is expected to reduce congestion at the Flowerpot intersection and other access points across the Accra-Tema Motorway.
The project, which has undergone multiple design revisions, aims to improve traffic flow and reduce bottlenecks. Among its notable features are dual carriageways, ramps, a redesigned roundabout, and pedestrian walkways on either side of the flyover. Additionally, streetlights, traffic signals, and road markings have been added to ensure safety and enhance the experience for both drivers and pedestrians.
The construction of this interchange is part of a broader government initiative to address Accra's traffic issues by developing critical transportation infrastructure. With the completion of the underpass at this location, the flyover now serves as an alternative route that enables smoother and quicker north-south movement across the region. The interchange’s location at Spintex Road is a strategic choice, addressing one of Accra’s most heavily trafficked intersections.
The primary goals of the Flower Pot Interchange project are to:
- Alleviate congestion along the Spintex Road corridor.
- Facilitate a direct route between Accra East and East Legon, improving access between these high-traffic areas.
- Enhance connectivity for commuters from Burma Camp and surrounding neighborhoods to the motorway.
- Offer alternative routes to reduce pressure on other access points across the motorway.
This project, built by China Railway No. 5 Engineering in collaboration with Deoke Consult, has been financed by a partnership between Afrexim Bank and the Government of Ghana. Spanning seven years of construction, this interchange marks an important milestone in Accra's transportation landscape, demonstrating the government’s commitment to improving mobility and supporting urban development.
The upcoming opening of the Flower Pot Interchange is expected to bring much-needed relief to commuters, making daily travel more convenient while reducing travel times. It is hoped that such infrastructure improvements will continue to drive Accra’s growth and positively impact the lives of residents by easing mobility within the city.
