NPP Parliamentary Candidate in Wa Central Rejects Bawumia, Endorses Mahama

In a surprising turn of events, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Wa Central, Alhaji Sulemana Issah, has publicly declared his endorsement of the opposition candidate, John Dramani Mahama, over his party's flagbearer, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. The unexpected announcement comes just weeks ahead of the crucial 2024 general elections, raising eyebrows and sparking debate within political circles and among the constituents of Wa Central.

Speaking at a community event in the Wa municipality, Alhaji Issah expressed deep dissatisfaction with what he described as Dr. Bawumia's lack of commitment to addressing pressing issues affecting the region. He stated that he believed Mahama was better positioned to tackle the challenges faced by the people in Wa Central, particularly in the areas of healthcare, infrastructure, and youth employment.

"I have been with the NPP for years, working tirelessly for our people, but when I look at what Dr. Bawumia has done for our community, I cannot, in good conscience, ask my people to support him. The promises made have not been fulfilled, and our community continues to struggle with inadequate resources," Issah declared. "John Mahama has shown genuine concern for the people of Wa Central, and I am convinced he will deliver."

Issah’s endorsement of Mahama represents a significant break from party lines and has been met with mixed reactions within the NPP. Party loyalists and officials have expressed shock and disappointment, as they had expected strong backing from all candidates to unify support for Bawumia. However, Issah’s supporters believe his decision reflects his integrity and commitment to putting the community's interests above party loyalty.

Dr. Bawumia’s campaign team has yet to release an official statement in response to Issah's comments, though some senior NPP members have reportedly reached out privately, urging him to reconsider his stance. Political analysts suggest that Issah’s endorsement of Mahama could potentially sway some voters in Wa Central, a constituency already considered a swing region in past elections.

In his statement, Issah noted that his decision was based on months of dialogue with constituents, who expressed concerns about unmet promises. "The people of Wa Central deserve real leadership that listens and takes action, not just words. Our future lies in effective policies that uplift the most vulnerable in our society," he asserted.

With election day approaching, Issah’s decision has set the stage for a more intense campaign season, as both the NPP and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) strategize to win over the undecided voters in the region.
