Residents of Sherigu Demand Resumption of Bolgatanga-Sherigu-Naaga Road Project
Residents of Sherigu, a community in the Bolgatanga Municipality of the Upper East Region, are calling on the government to resume work on the long-abandoned Bolgatanga-Sherigu-Naaga road project. This stretch, which links Bolgatanga to Naaga through Sherigu, has become a source of frustration and concern for locals, as the dilapidated road affects the movement of people, goods, and services.
The Bolgatanga-Sherigu-Naaga road is a crucial route for residents, farmers, and traders in the area. It serves as a vital link for agricultural produce from the rural communities to the markets in Bolgatanga, helping to sustain local economies and food security in the region. However, the poor state of the road has led to delays, increased transportation costs, and challenges in accessing health services. Community members say the road, once passable, has deteriorated to the point where it becomes almost impassable during the rainy season, causing frequent accidents and making travel extremely difficult.
Alhaji Moro Issah, a resident of Sherigu and a commercial driver, expressed his frustration with the situation, saying, “The road has been neglected for far too long. During the rainy season, we can hardly drive on it. Sometimes we have to spend hours trying to navigate through muddy sections. It’s difficult for us as drivers and it’s also dangerous for passengers.”
Farmers in the area, who rely on the road to transport their produce, also suffer from the lack of proper infrastructure. According to Abena Kpenti, a local vegetable farmer, the road's poor condition has forced them to sell their produce at lower prices in the community instead of taking it to the market. “We cannot reach the Bolgatanga market on time, so we end up selling our produce cheaply because it starts going bad before we get there,” she noted.
Leaders within the community have expressed their concerns and hope that the government will heed their pleas. Chief Naba Alhassan of Sherigu remarked, “Our community has suffered enough, and we are calling on the government to urgently resume the construction of this road. It will benefit not just our community but the entire municipality.”
The road project, initially launched with the promise of improving accessibility and promoting economic growth, was halted due to a lack of funds. Since then, the road has been left unfinished, resulting in disappointment and broken trust among the residents. Local Assembly Member Ms. Asibi Mahama voiced the community’s frustration, urging immediate action from the government to fulfill its promise. “It is our right as citizens to have access to good roads, and we feel neglected. We urge the authorities to complete what they started and restore hope to the people,” she said.
In response to the concerns, the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly has acknowledged the situation, promising that plans are underway to secure funds to complete the road. An official from the assembly, speaking anonymously, indicated that they are aware of the challenges residents face and have submitted requests to the regional administration for assistance.
As the community awaits the response, the people of Sherigu hope their appeal will not go unheard. For them, the completion of the Bolgatanga-Sherigu-Naaga road would improve their lives, make transportation safer, and open doors for economic growth, making the community a more connected and thriving part of the Upper East Region.
