The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has raised serious concerns about professionalism within its ranks, pointing to rising issues of substance abuse and inappropriate behavior among healthcare workers that may impact patient care. In a speech at the GMA’s Annual General Meeting, GMA President Dr. Frank Serebour highlighted ongoing challenges including absenteeism, chronic lateness, and a lack of commitment to the full workday, which he argued undermine trust in the healthcare sector.
Dr. Serebour reported an increase in incidents where some health professionals leave their posts early, compromising both patient care and workplace standards. These practices, he noted, contradict the professionalism expected within the medical field and may be symptomatic of deeper issues within the profession.
In addition to absenteeism, the GMA addressed concerns over substance abuse. Instances of alcohol and drug misuse, Dr. Serebour noted, have affected the quality of care that some health workers provide, impacting both their professional performance and personal well-being. These issues, he warned, could have far-reaching consequences if not addressed promptly.
Dr. Serebour also acknowledged the problem of sexual misconduct within the profession, revealing that several cases of sexual harassment involving health workers are currently under review by the Medical and Dental Council. These allegations, he said, pose a significant reputational risk to the healthcare sector, further diminishing public trust. He stressed the importance of accountability, urging members to uphold ethical standards and ensure the safety and dignity of both patients and colleagues.
The GMA has also faced a number of lawsuits related to medical and professional negligence, further underscoring the need for a return to rigorous professional standards. Dr. Serebour pointed out that, at times, cases against healthcare workers are dismissed not because they lack merit but because victims or complainants attribute incidents to cultural beliefs rather than pursuing legal avenues.
As the GMA works to address these concerns, Dr. Serebour called for a renewed commitment from all healthcare professionals to uphold integrity, professionalism, and ethical responsibility in their practice. His speech served as a reminder that the GMA is committed to protecting the reputation of the medical profession and ensuring that patients receive the highest standards of care. The GMA’s acknowledgment of these challenges, alongside its commitment to reform, marks a step toward restoring confidence in Ghana’s healthcare system and reinforcing the values that guide the profession.
