One of Ghana's well-admired and respected lawyers and academics, Professor Tsatsu Tsikata, has declared his support for the former President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, ahead of the polls. The respected lawyer, who has held some of the most influential positions in the country and outside politics, did so during a recent public engagement, arguing that Mahama was the best candidate to move the country forward.
Making the remark, Tsikata was also the immediate past Chief Executive of the GNPC, and a leading personality in Ghana's legal and political landscape. He reiterated Mahama's vision for national development through unity amongst all Ghanaians irrespective of political orientation. According to Tsikata, leadership under the nose of Mahama between 2012 and 2016 was characterized by infrastructural development, economic stability, and social welfare programs that brought direct benefits to ordinary Ghanaians.
Tsikata also praised Mahama for his profound understanding of the challenges with the country's governance and how he is able to establish solid international relations. According to him, from his records in championing peace and development on the African continent, Mahama is best positioned to guide Ghana through the complexities of today's global and domestic issues.
Besides that, Tsikata, one of the key flag bearers of the NDC, contended that Mahama's stints in the executive and, before that, in the legislative arms of government make him better placed to get the country's economic growth back on track, ensure inclusiveness in development, and put the urgent concerns of the Ghanaian electorate at the center of its political agenda.
The endorsement has come at a time when the political temperature in Ghana is warming up; this is ahead of an intensely contested election between the governing New Patriotic Party and the NDC. Tsikata's endorsement is likely to be highly sensitive among the ranks of the NDC, hence giving a major boost to Mahama in an effort to recapture the presidency in the coming election.
It would, therefore, not be difficult to envision that his campaign could gain more traction right before election day, considering that influential figures like Tsikata are among those supporting him.
