Coventry City has confirmed former Chelsea and England star Frank Lampard as one of the main contenders for their head coach position after the club parted ways with Mark Robins last week. Coventry City owner Doug King, during a fan forum at the Coventry Building Society Arena, shared that the club has received numerous applications for the role, with Lampard’s being one of the high-profile submissions. King emphasized that they are carefully assessing their options, as they consider this an essential decision for the club’s future, and will soon work on creating a shortlist.

Lampard, currently leading the bookmakers' predictions for the job, has a varied managerial background. He previously led Derby County to the Championship play-off final in 2019 and later managed Chelsea and Everton in the Premier League, although his last role as Chelsea's caretaker manager ended in 2023. In addition to Lampard, other potential candidates include Robbie Keane, a former Sky Blues striker with recent managerial experience in the Indian Super League and with Maccabi Tel Aviv, as well as Lee Carsley, currently the England Under-21 coach, who is set to finish his interim role with the senior England squad soon. Wycombe Wanderers boss Matt Bloomfield, who’s currently managing a League One-leading team, has also been linked to the vacancy, though he dismissed the rumors as speculation.

Until a new head coach is appointed, Rhys Carr, Coventry’s joint first-team coach, will continue as the caretaker manager. Carr has already led the team in a comeback from 2-0 down to secure a draw with league leaders Sunderland, demonstrating his ability to hold the team together during this transition period. Coventry’s management aims to take its time in finding the right fit for the role, intending to ensure a stable and successful future for the team under the new coaching structure established over the past two years. The Sky Blues' next fixture is a home game against Sheffield United, scheduled for November 23.
