Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumi has listed seven important things the governing New Patriotic Party has done to improve the health of Ghanaians, insisting the commitment by this government is to ensure good health care for all citizens.
At a recent event, for example, Dr. Bawumia named healthcare as one of the core areas of focus for the NPP administration. Accordingly, he cited some key initiatives that have brought about strengthening in the health sector since the party took office in 2017.
1. Introduction of the National Health Insurance Scheme Reforms
He showed that the government has instituted wide-ranging reforms into the NHIS to widen its scope of coverage, as well as enhance service delivery. These reforms have sought to make healthcare more affordable and accessible to a greater number of citizens, especially in less privileged areas.
2. Establishment of the National Ambulance Service Fleet
The government increased the number of ambulances in the country to improve emergency services for medical purposes. In fact, it really accelerated the speed and effectiveness of responses toward medical emergencies, especially in remote areas.
3. Agenda 111 Hospital Projects
The introduction of the Agenda 111 initiative by the NPP administration has been one of the most ambitious healthcare infrastructure projects into the annals of Ghana's history. Construction of 111 district hospitals, among a number of other health facilities across the country, will help address gaps in health infrastructure and, hence, regional disparities in health access.
4. Free Maternal Healthcare
In the wake of ensuring maternal health, the government has continued to ensure that pregnant women access health services like antenatal and postnatal care and delivery services amidst other services at no cost, as a furtherance of its policy on free maternal healthcare.
5. Supply of Medical Equipment and Medicines
The current administration, led by Dr. Bawumia, is urgently upgrading medical equipment in hospitals and clinics and increasing the availability of essential medicines. New medical supplies have been procured, coupled with rehabilitation of older ones, thus improving quality care.
6. COVID-19 Response and Vaccination Drive
Another focus was mass testing and the NPP government's vaccination drive across the nation, thereby vaccinating the population quickly to protect them from its impact on public health.
7. Training and Capacity Building of Health Professionals
He finally noted that the government is investing in training and capacity building of the human resources within the health facilities. In this regard, the NPP is aspiring to have increased medical professionals while better skills are enhanced so as to arm the workforce with an ability to meet the needs of health in the country.
Dr. Bawumia emphasized that the NPP remains committed to making health care available, accessible, equitable, and effective for all citizens. He added that the health component would be a highly relevant feature in the party's agenda for the future.
