Rennes Appoint Jorge Sampaoli as Coach to Revive Struggling Ligue 1 Campaign
Struggling French Ligue 1 club Rennes has appointed former Argentina head coach Jorge Sampaoli as their new manager, hoping to revitalize the team’s fortunes. The 64-year-old, known for his intense coaching style and tactical acumen, replaces Julien Stéphan, who was dismissed last week after a disappointing start to the season. Sampaoli's extensive managerial career includes stints with Chile, Marseille, and Sevilla, where he earned a reputation for his high-energy approach and passion for attacking football.
Rennes’ decision to bring in Sampaoli follows a difficult period for the club. After finishing sixth in Ligue 1 last season, Rennes failed to qualify for European competition, marking their first absence from European football in seven years. This season has been even more challenging, with the club languishing in 13th place in the 18-team Ligue 1 table, having won just three of their first 11 matches. The team’s lackluster performances culminated in a defeat to Toulouse at home, which Sampaoli witnessed firsthand before his appointment.
In a statement, Rennes’ executive chairman, Arnaud Pouille, expressed optimism about the new appointment. "We're delighted that Jorge is joining us. He is a coach who is recognised internationally for his professionalism and humanism," Pouille said. He highlighted Sampaoli’s strong bond with players and staff, noting his loyalty and commitment as key attributes the club needs to overcome its current struggles. Pouille emphasized that the team needs Sampaoli’s energy and determination to move forward and regain their competitive edge.
With his experience managing high-profile teams and a track record of turning clubs around, Sampaoli will be hoping to inject some much-needed momentum into Rennes as they aim to climb the Ligue 1 standings and secure a return to European competition.
