Two Killed, Several Injured in Violent Clashes in Bawku

 Bawku, Kusaug Region — November 13, 2024

A resurgence of violent clashes in Bawku has left two people dead and several others injured, adding to the ongoing insecurity in this volatile area of the Kusaug Region. Authorities have confirmed the incident, which reportedly began late on Monday night, though details remain sparse as the situation continues to evolve.

Witnesses from the scene described an atmosphere of terror, with gunfire echoing through parts of the town. “It all happened so fast,” said one resident, who requested anonymity for safety reasons. “People just ran for their lives. Some were trapped inside their homes, fearing for their safety.” According to preliminary reports, two individuals succumbed to injuries sustained during the clash, while a number of others were rushed to nearby health facilities with varying degrees of injuries.

Security forces responded swiftly to restore calm, but residents say tensions remain high as both fear and frustration mount. "We've been working day and night to keep the area stable, but unfortunately, things escalated again," a local security official commented, citing longstanding ethnic and land disputes as factors that have exacerbated Bawku's vulnerability to violence. The authorities have since increased security patrols and placed checkpoints across key areas in Bawku in an effort to prevent further incidents.

The Regional Security Council (REGSEC), in collaboration with local leaders, has intensified efforts to contain the situation, urging calm and calling for cooperation from residents to de-escalate tensions. Kusaug Region’s Regional Minister, in a statement, expressed deep sorrow over the incident, adding, “We condemn any form of violence, and we are committed to bringing lasting peace to Bawku. Every life lost to violence is a tragedy for our region, and we appeal to all parties to come together in the spirit of peace.”

The Bawku Naba, Naaba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, also weighed in, urging residents to exercise restraint. “Violence solves nothing and only brings further hardship to our community. We must work together to ensure Bawku can thrive once again in peace,” the chief’s statement read.

Monday’s incident is one of several similar occurrences that have plagued Bawku in recent years, often linked to complex socio-political tensions in the area. The violence not only threatens residents’ safety but also disrupts everyday life, as schools, businesses, and local transportation services are forced to halt during such times.

Meanwhile, civil society groups have called on the national government to intensify dialogue and address the root causes of the recurrent violence. “This ongoing cycle of violence will never end if the issues underlying these clashes are not addressed. We need long-term solutions that involve all stakeholders, including traditional leaders, civil society, and the local community,” said a representative of the Kusaug Peace Initiative.

The police and other law enforcement agencies are conducting investigations into the recent clashes to hold those responsible accountable. Residents are hopeful that these measures, combined with renewed peace efforts, will finally bring stability to Bawku, an area known for its rich cultural heritage and historical importance but increasingly marked by violence in recent years.

As the community mourns the recent loss of life, many are calling on the government to prioritize lasting peace in Bawku, emphasizing that true progress can only come in an environment where safety and unity prevail.
