Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has extended his profound appreciation to the Catholic Bishops Conference of Ghana for what he described as "fatherly advice" and guidance, following a recent meeting between the Vice President and the Conference.
In a statement, Bawumia said the interaction had been "uplifting and enriching" because the Catholic Bishops made valuable recommendations on a number of national matters bordering on economic development, social cohesion, and good governance. The meeting at the Vice President's office in Accra was part of existing interaction between government agents and religious leaders to help engender peace, unity, and development in the country.
Bawumia noted that religious institutions, especially the Catholic Church, play a very important role in helping promote moral values and social responsibility. He indicated that their guidance has invariably been critical in helping shape national policies that prioritize the well-being of Ghanaians, especially those who are most vulnerable.
"We are grateful for the Church's support and the words of wisdom from the Bishops," he said. "Their advice has always served as a source of strength for the government in particular as we go through hard economic times with the view of attaining long-run prosperity for the nation."
The bishops took the advantage of the meeting and pointed out the inflation, unemployment, and poverty that are really making the country choke at the moment. They called upon the government to further strive toward the elimination of these issues without leaving a single person behind in the way of development.
Bawumia assured the Bishops that the government remained committed to such challenges and would therefore work toward policies that would ensure inclusivity and thereby make for more equitable growth to all citizens. He also reiterated the importance of unity and collaboration between the government, the Church, and all stakeholders in achieving these goals.
He then concluded by reiterating his respect for the many years of contribution which the Catholic Church has given toward the social and moral cause in Ghana, insisting that their partnership remains very paramount in the building of a prosperous and peaceful future of the nation.
