Following the successive internal party contestations in the lead-up to the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections, the National Democratic Congress says its target is to mop up 32% of votes in the Ashanti Region. This was disclosed by the party's top officials as part of its campaign strategy in a region that has traditionally been dominated by the New Patriotic Party.
The Ashanti Region is, by many turns, the political heartbeat of the NPP. However, the region has always tested the will of opposition parties. However, the NDC is full of determination to break the crisis by directly appealing to all cross-sections of voters, to the youths, women, and other people frustrated with the policies of the current administration.
Speaking at the recent campaign event, NDC's Ashanti Regional Chairman Mr. Augustus Nana Akwasi reiterated that the 32% target is not just by strategy but by how people in the region are getting more frustrated economically and also over government policies. He said these were issues such as inflation, unemployment, and cost of living, which were handled shoddily by the NPP, causing greater frustration in the voters.
The people of Ashanti are now waking up to realize that all that this government promised them have not been achieved. We listen to them and we offer them a very viable alternative. Our target of 32% is ambitious, but we believe it's achievable through work and engagement," Akwasi said.
A message and a campaign The NDC will focus their campaign on concerns that seemingly are key among major sectors: issues of education, healthcare, development of infrastructures, providing jobs, and relieving the economy's burden of citizens. This party also looks forward to relating well to the youth, who represent the majority of electorates.
As the 2024 election draws nearer, the NDC is doubling its effort in extending its wings across all regions in the country and has particularly set its eyes on Ashanti as one of the regions to help achieve the party's broader electoral play. The party is of the opinion that a fraction of Ashanti's vote share in the elections would prove handy toward the result of the election.
