Former President Kufuor Endorses Dr. Bawumia as “The Man of the Moment” for Ghana

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has publicly endorsed Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), calling him “the man of the moment” for Ghana. In an interview with Asempa FM, Kufuor expressed his unwavering confidence in Dr. Bawumia’s capabilities, highlighting his unique qualifications and readiness to lead the country into a new era of transformation.

Kufuor praised Dr. Bawumia’s impressive career trajectory, noting that he began his professional journey as a research assistant to the Governor of the Bank of Ghana at the young age of 31. This early start laid the foundation for a distinguished career that has seen him serve in various significant roles, including as a professor, a senior consultant to the African Development Bank, and as the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank. Most notably, Dr. Bawumia has held the position of Vice President for the past eight years, experiences that Kufuor believes have equipped him with the necessary skills and insights for high-level leadership.

“Bawumia has been well-prepared, and I think his preparation makes him unique for the position,” Kufuor stated, emphasizing that such extensive experience is vital for anyone aspiring to lead a nation.

A Unifying Figure

In his remarks, Kufuor also highlighted Dr. Bawumia’s exceptional ability to bring people together across various religious and ethnic backgrounds. He noted that, despite being a Muslim, Dr. Bawumia has successfully cultivated strong relationships with Ghana’s Christian community, an important aspect in a country where religious and ethnic divisions can sometimes create tensions.

“I have observed his good conduct. He is not divisive,” Kufuor said, adding that Bawumia’s character allows him to connect with people from all walks of life. “He is a northerner, but he gets along so well with everybody. In a country where many try to use religion or ethnicity to create division, Bawumia stands out as a unifier.” This quality, according to Kufuor, is essential for fostering national cohesion and promoting unity in Ghana.

Vision for the Future

Kufuor also emphasized Dr. Bawumia’s international exposure and his understanding of contemporary global trends, particularly in technology and digitalization. He believes these skills are crucial for modern leadership in an increasingly interconnected world. “Bawumia is well-versed in contemporary global issues, whether in America or other developed parts of the world,” Kufuor noted. He stressed the importance of having a leader who can navigate the complexities of modern affairs and leverage technological advancements for the benefit of Ghana.

The former president drew parallels to young American tech billionaires who are shaping the world through their innovative digital influences. He posited that Ghana, too, could benefit from a leader who understands the power of technology—something he sees as a significant strength in Dr. Bawumia. “We need somebody like him who understands modern trends in global affairs and also in technology and digitalization,” he remarked.

Kufuor’s endorsement of Dr. Bawumia highlights a belief that the vice president possesses the qualities necessary to lead Ghana toward a brighter future. With his extensive experience, ability to unite diverse groups, and tech-savvy vision, Kufuor believes Bawumia is uniquely positioned to guide the nation through the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. As the political landscape in Ghana evolves, the former president’s support could play a pivotal role in shaping public perception and influencing the upcoming elections.
