Military Misconduct in Bawku: Exploiting the Vulnerable During Conflict

In the past week, Bawku has seen a surge of controversial activities involving the military personnel stationed there. Deployed for peacekeeping, their primary duty is to maintain stability and support security, yet recent reports indicate that some soldiers are overstepping these responsibilities. These alleged activities have raised alarm and frustration among the residents of Bawku.

One of the most troubling allegations is the unauthorized transport services purportedly provided by the military. According to sources, personnel are using armored vehicles to shuttle people from the Old Market in Bawku to Bolgatanga. This service bypasses official checkpoints, creating a risky, unofficial route out of the conflict zone. Shockingly, soldiers reportedly charge around GHC 400 for this unofficial transport—a steep price for residents in a region where economic stability has been shattered by the ongoing conflict.

For those trying to escape the dangers and restrictions of the area, this demand for money adds a further burden to their struggle. Many individuals lack the means to afford such a fee, which has left them stranded and desperate for a safer way out. The military’s decision to exploit these vulnerable people undermines the very peacekeeping mission they were assigned to fulfill. It also reveals a disregard for the financial hardship that residents already face in this time of crisis.

Additionally, the situation in Bawku and Walewale has led to a partial lockdown on vehicle movement, further complicating daily life. Security forces have been reluctant to escort civilian vehicles, leaving people with limited options to travel safely. These allegations, if confirmed, demonstrate how some personnel are using this restriction to monopolize transit out of Bawku, profiting from the conflict situation.

This conduct has severe implications. The military, tasked with peacekeeping, is there to protect and serve without exploiting the people. Engaging in these “side deals” could worsen public mistrust, making it even harder to stabilize the area. If peacekeepers appear to be acting out of self-interest, local communities may see them as part of the problem, not a solution.

Now, more than ever, a peaceful resolution is needed. Security personnel must recommit to their mandate without taking advantage of those suffering from the crisis. The military leadership must investigate these actions swiftly and hold any guilty parties accountable. The people of Bawku deserve transparency and respect, not exploitation in their hour of need.
