Dormahene and Upper East Regional House of Chiefs President Pay Courtesy Call to Zugraan Asigri Abugrago Azoka II


*Bawku, 14th November 2024* – In a significant display of unity and respect, Dormahene Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II, paramount chief of the Dormaa Traditional Area, joined the President of the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs, Naaba Sigri Bewong, in paying a courtesy call to His Royal Highness Zugraan Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, Bawku Naba, at his palace in Bawku.


The visit, which took place on Wednesday, was marked by an exchange of goodwill and the reaffirmation of shared values among the traditional leaders. The atmosphere at the palace was one of dignity and respect, as a delegation from the Dormaa Traditional Area joined the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs in greeting the Zugraan, also known as Bawku Naba. The delegation was warmly received by Zugraan Azoka II and his council of elders.


In his opening remarks, Dormahene Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II expressed admiration for Zugraan Azoka II's leadership in Kusaug and praised his ongoing efforts to foster peace and development in the area. Dormahene highlighted the importance of collaboration among traditional authorities in tackling issues affecting local communities, particularly those relating to youth empowerment, infrastructure, and the preservation of culture. He noted, “Our traditions remain the backbone of our communities, and it is through collaboration that we will ensure peace and prosperity for our people.”


President of the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs, Naaba Sigri Bewong, added his voice to the call for unity, emphasizing the responsibility that traditional leaders bear in promoting harmony across regions. He praised Zugraan Azoka II for his unwavering commitment to the welfare of his people and acknowledged the significance of such engagements in creating bonds of friendship and understanding. “Your Highness, your work here is a source of pride for all in the Upper East Region. It is through this kind of unity and collaboration that we as chiefs can serve our people better,” he remarked.


Zugraan Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, a respected figure not only within Kusaug but across Ghana, expressed his gratitude for the visit and underscored his commitment to peacebuilding efforts in Bawku and beyond. He spoke of the challenges his people have faced, including recent incidents of conflict, and stressed the need for resilience, cooperation, and mutual respect among all ethnic and traditional groups. In his response, he said, “Our region has endured many challenges, yet our culture teaches us to persevere and seek peace for future generations. This visit is a reminder that we are united in purpose.”


The discussion also touched on cultural preservation, as the chiefs deliberated on ways to safeguard the heritage of their respective regions. As traditional leaders, they noted the importance of passing down values to younger generations, instilling in them a respect for history and tradition. Dormahene Agyeman Badu II expressed his willingness to partner with Zugraan Azoka II on initiatives aimed at promoting traditional music, dance, and festivals in both Dormaa and Kusaug.


The visit concluded with an exchange of traditional gifts, a powerful gesture symbolizing goodwill and mutual respect. Dormahene presented Zugraan Azoka II with a beautifully crafted Kente cloth from Dormaa, while Zugraan Azoka II reciprocated with a Daam, a traditional artifact from the Kusaug people, which holds deep significance in the community.


As they departed, the chiefs expressed optimism about the future and reiterated their resolve to work together for the advancement of their communities. This historic meeting serves as a testament to the strength and unity among Ghana’s traditional rulers, who continue to play an essential role in the country’s journey toward peace and prosperity.
