The way you start your day will determine the momentum of your day. Consistently making your morning routine confident and industrious can stimulate energy, focus, and preparation for anything that may come along. Here are a few simple activities one can do immediately after waking up to help one get the most out of their day:
1. Drinking Water
Your body is dehydrated after a whole night of sleep. The first glass of water your system gets in the morning rehydrates your system and kick-starts your metabolism, along with improving the performance of the brain. It also helps to flush out toxins and can aid in digestion.
2. Avoid the Snooze Button
But while it's all too tempting to hit that snooze button, know this: doing so will disturb your sleep cycle and only leave you feeling groggy. Try very hard not to give in to the temptation, and rise the minute your alarm rings. If you are tired, it simply means you need to adjust your bedtime, not hit that snooze button.
3. Stretch or Move Your Body
Use light exercises, such as yoga or a short walk, which can be done in bed. Increased blood flow will help loosen some rigidity of sleeping and raise energy levels; it prepares your body for the day. It takes only a few minutes of movement to awaken both the muscles and the mind.
4. Practice Mindfulness
Take some time to practice mindfulness or meditation, where one focuses on one's breath, sets a positive intention for the day, or reflects upon what one is grateful for. Such a practice could very easily promote a calm and focused mindset to get one through the hustle and bustle of the day ahead with far less stress.
5. Eat a Healthy Breakfast
It has been said, very rightfully, that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and rightly so. Eating a well-rounded breakfast packed with protein, healthy fats, and fiber can give you sustained energy and avoid mid-morning slumps. Steer clear of sugary cereals or pastries because they will lead to an energy crash later on.
If you incorporate these simple steps into your morning routine, each day will start fresh and centered, ready for any challenge that comes along.
