The Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications has disclosed that the telecom industry contributed a remarkable GH₵9.83 billion in taxes and other financial remittances to the government in 2023. This amount represents a 30% increase from the GH₵6 billion recorded in 2022, and it accounts for approximately 7.38% of Ghana’s total revenue for the year.

Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey, CEO of the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications, highlighted the sector’s substantial role in supporting Ghana’s economic growth. Speaking at the release of the Transparency Initiative Report, he emphasized the telecom sector’s commitment to being a pivotal player in national development through both direct and indirect contributions.

“Telecom companies have truly demonstrated their economic value by paying progressive taxes that are making a significant impact,” Dr. Ashigbey stated. “In 2023, the sector’s total contributions amounted to GH₵9.8 billion, accounting for about 7.4% of government revenue.”

Beyond financial contributions, the telecom sector continues to play a key role in job creation. According to the report, the industry directly provided 2,464 jobs in 2023, a slight decrease from the 2,600 jobs recorded in 2022. While the decrease is modest, the telecom industry remains a significant employer within Ghana's economy.

The figures are drawn from the Transparency Initiative Report, a collaboration between the Ghana Telecommunications Chamber and the Electronic Money Issuers Chamber of Ghana. This report not only tracks financial contributions but also underscores the broader economic impact of the telecom industry. By highlighting transparency, the report aims to provide stakeholders, including the government and the public, with a clearer understanding of the telecom sector’s contributions.

The telecom industry’s growth is also influenced by Ghana’s expanding digital ecosystem, with mobile money and digital financial services seeing steady adoption across the country. This expansion has generated a broader tax base, enhancing the sector’s contributions to the national economy.

Looking ahead, Dr. Ashigbey urged continued collaboration between telecom operators and government agencies to maintain this growth trajectory. He noted that with the right regulatory environment, the telecom sector could further increase its contributions to the economy through innovation and digital services.

The telecom sector’s impact on Ghana’s economy remains significant, as illustrated by its tax contributions and role in job creation. With the digital economy growing rapidly, the industry is poised to make even greater contributions to Ghana’s development, driving both financial gains and technological progress.
