The Interest of Mahamudu Bawumia and Akufo-Addo’s Government in the Bawku Conflict

Recent events in Bawku have raised serious concerns regarding the role of prominent government officials in escalating tensions in the conflict-prone area. Allegations point to the involvement of the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and the Akufo-Addo government in actions that could undermine peace and security in the region.

Reports indicate that shortly after President Akufo-Addo’s visit to the Nayiri in Nalerigu, military personnel were dispatched on a covert mission to the north. These soldiers, reportedly unaware of their assignment, were heavily armed and tasked with facilitating operations in favor of the Mamprusis in Bawku. This development followed the president’s promise to bring a fugitive figure, Seidu Abagre, to Bawku, despite widespread objections and its potential to destabilize the area further.

It is alleged that these military operatives carried significant quantities of ammunition intended specifically for Mamprusi factions in Bawku. Orders reportedly originated from the Office of the Vice President, directing the mission to escort Seidu Abagre back to Bawku and neutralize any opposition by force. In a related incident, Sule Bobtoya, a Mamprusi operative, was allegedly killed in a Kusasi-dominated area in Daduri. The weapons in his possession are claimed to have been supplied through these covert channels.

More troubling are allegations of weapon shipments organized from the Vice President's office to Mamprusi territories. A recent report claimed that a bus carrying 40 rifles, ammunition, and magazines was sent to Walewale for distribution among Mamprusi communities. However, three rifles reportedly went missing during transit, raising questions about their final destination. Critics allege that these weapons are being distributed under the guise of political campaign activities using vehicles associated with Dr. Bawumia.

Further claims suggest that Dr. Bawumia held a meeting with Mamprusi leaders, including Abiola, where strategies to disrupt the upcoming elections in Bawku were discussed. The rationale appears to stem from the perception that the Kusasi-dominated electorate would not favor his political ambitions. A recent post by a known Mamprusi sympathizer, Rasta Man, on social media bolstered these fears, explicitly stating that elections would not take place in Bawku.

Over the past week, Bawku has witnessed renewed violence, including gunfire and targeted attacks. These activities have instilled fear among residents and threaten the community's ability to participate in the December 7, 2024, elections. The use of violence as a political tool undermines Ghana’s democratic principles and raises serious ethical concerns about the role of government officials in the conflict.

The ongoing tensions demand urgent attention from stakeholders, including security agencies, civil society, and international observers. There must be a transparent investigation into these allegations to hold accountable those perpetuating violence for political gain. Without swift action, the potential for widespread voter suppression and a breakdown of democracy in Bawku looms large.

Peace and justice must prevail in Bawku to ensure the region contributes meaningfully to Ghana’s democratic process. Those responsible for orchestrating violence and disrupting the electoral process must face the full force of the law to preserve the sanctity of democracy.
